Oldies but Goodies

Tee Shirt Galaxy via Etsy.com
Once upon a time, when everyone else was watching Gilmore Girls, I wasn't. I don't know where I was, what I was doing, or how I missed this cultural phenomenon, but somehow, I did.

Last fall, I decided to investigate these shows I'd heard so much about, and, after a false start trying to record episodes in syndication, I downloaded the series from Netflix. It took me a few shows to get into it, but by the end of first season, I was hooked. I also saw why the agent who represented me for Casting the First Stone drew a parallel between my book and Gilmore Girls. Lorelai could definitely hang out with Marita and Bets, and I was really glad I hadn't seen the show before I wrote the book. As it is, the similarities are uncanny.

As a reader, I'm drawn into any story where I care about the characters, and as a writer, the characters are where my stories always begin. It was fun watching Rory -- who began the series younger than my daughter is now -- grow up, and listening to the interplay between Rory and Lorelai always made me smile. Even now, having watched the show from premier to series finale, I still end most evenings watching an episode or two since my DVR has mysteriously resolved its aversion to recording them.

When the show first aired, my daughter was small and I wouldn't have identified with it the way I do now. Watching it as the parent of a high school senior -- one who walked around New Haven just last summer -- it resonates with me very differently than it would have when I was the parent of a three-year-old attending day care in Pennsylvania. I know it sounds weird to say, but Gilmore Girls came into my life at just the right time. Its impeccable timing not only allowed it to nudge syndicated episodes of Friends and that other GG (The Golden Girls) out of my late-night ritual, but also set me up perfectly for the Netflix revival of the show that's on the horizon.

This week, my daughter and I are heading into Stars Hollow territory to visit a college that's a front runner for her. I only hope I can be as cool as Lorelai. But even if I can't, you can bet I'll be watching the revival.

I might even wear my Luke's Diner sweatshirt.

Friday Freebie: Why Apple Won't Unlock that Phone

apple.com
I've been following the reporting on the dispute between Apple and the FBI over the San Bernardino shooter's phone with fascination. As the owner of an iPhone (and an iPad and a Macbook), I appreciate Apple holding the line on customer privacy. As a human being disturbed by the seemingly unchecked rise in shootings in this country, I want justice for the families of the victims and answers as to why these things happen.

But I have to wonder if unlocking the cell phone will cause either of those things to happen. It certainly won't bring back those who died.

But mostly I have to wonder why Apple is more concerned with my privacy than my government is. I'm inclined to agree with the writers of this NPR article ("Why Apple Says It Won't Help Unlock That iPhone, In 5 Key Quotes") -- and many of the commenters.

It's a slippery slope.

Gina Dishes

cafepress.com
Gina here again. Lisa was nice enough to give me one more week (she made me say that), and, as promised, I want to dish about the people in her books Casting the First Stone and Chasing a Second Chance.

Trouble is, I've never met most of them. I love Angel and am proud to cawl her my friend, which is actually kinda funny since we're so different. Her husband? Ugh. Another story. She sooo deserves better. And that mother-in-law of hers? Whatta piece of work! Five minutes with her explains a lot about Prince Not-So-Charming, even when he's not in the same room.

As for everybody else, I've never met 'em, but Angel has told me stuff. Good stuff, of course, because that's Angel. When it comes to not knowing the Bible study ladies, I don't feel too cheated. I know they're probably nice people, but church ladies...well, we just don't have a lot in common. Even Angel and I struggle with that sometimes.

But when it comes to Marita and her kid -- they sound kinda cool. I didn't used to think so, back when Marita was being all snooty with Angel. But, according to Angel, Marita came around. And Angel sure is crazy about Charli.

Marita's friend Bets sounds like someone I'd like to hang out with. Angel says we're a lot alike. Not sure if that means we'd get along, or be two queen bees tryin' to get in the biggest sting.

So, whadda you think?
  • Jim: Overbearing and obnoxious or maligned and misunderstood?
  • Marita: Perfect parent or trashy trollop?
  • Bets: Fun & feisty or boozy & bawdy?
  • Charli: Sassy stepdaughter or teenage trouble?
  • That Lukas dude: Sweet & stabilizing or sanctimonious & self-serving?
Leave me a comment and lemme know. And while you're at it, tell Lisa who you'd like to see me in a scene with. Word is, the more people I know, the better my chances of hangin' around.

To Resolve, Perhaps, To Read

Perhaps if I could pass a bookstore without going in, I'd have less of a problem.
Photo: browseaboutbooks.com
I just bought a new book for my Kindle. And there's a novel at home that's due back to the library today, only I haven't yet finished reading it. In addition, I not only have full bookcases in the living room and the mudroom, but also bins of books in the basement. I could feed my reading habit for a year -- perhaps longer -- without ever leaving my house.

Hi, I'm Lisa and I'm a bookaholic.

I know I'm not alone. I know that for every one of you out there reading this and shaking his or her head, there's at least one person nodding along, copping to her own pile of books under the bed or his own stack of stories on the nightstand.

The sad thing is, I actually had to make a new year's resolution to read. I'm obviously well-supplied, and it's certainly something I enjoy. So...why? Why did I need to resolve to make time to do something I love?

bethanybeachbooks.com
It's a conundrum familiar to many people, and perhaps more common among writers than any other group of bibliophiles. Life is busy, and full of many things. If we're lucky, we enjoy most of those things, and if we're realistic, some simply cannot be ignored.

And so reading is that thing we fit in "when there's time." For writers, writing often gets assigned the same time slot. Some days -- many days -- "when there's time" doesn't materialize and on those days when it does, we need to choose. Read or write? What should, in a perfect world, be a 50-50 split is more like a 10-90 landslide.

So the books pile up. E-books only make it worse. I can at least see my stash of paperbacks and magazines. Some days, I can practically hear them calling to me. But e-books? They're neatly tucked away, efficiently lined up on a list, patiently waiting for me to blow the dust off my Kindle or open my Nook app and give them the time of day.

Which I will do. Today. Or maybe later this week.

As soon as I finish that novel.

Friday Freebie: Peace and Quiet

minimography.com

I have always been someone who works better in peace and quiet than in hubbub. So last weekend, when I stumbled across Jennifer King Lindley's article, "Can I Have Some Peace and Quiet?!?" I read it eagerly, and with a little bit of gloating, if I'm to be honest.

While I couldn't find a link to the full article, which appeared in the January issue of Real Simple, I did find Lindley's "5 Small Changes to Make Your House Quieter," so I'm sharing that instead. Hey --  every little bit helps.

Wishing you a weekend with just the right amount of quiet.
